All Star Race/Coca-Cola 600 Recap
Hello everyone and welcome back to Captain Josh's Pit Stop. Happy Late Memorial Day and thanks to all our fallen soldiers who paid their sacrifice for our freedom. I apologize for my recent absence as we had a rough month. But I'm back and ready to report on the Monster Energy All Star Race and the Coca-Cola 600. Now let's get to it. Kyle Busch had a great All Star weekend winning the Truck race on Friday night and taking home his first All Star race win of his career on Saturday night. And now on to Memorial Day weekend where the big three races occurred on Sunday, starting with the F1 Monaco Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel continued his great start to the season by winning his third race of the season in his Ferrari. Takuma Sato picked up the 101st Indianapolis 500 in his Andretti Honda. Ryan Blaney won the Hisense 4K 300 Xfinity race on Saturday. Now to the 600. Photo courtesy of Google images.
The Coca-Cola 600 ran on Sunday evening with Kevin Harvick on the pole with All Star winner Kyle Busch alongside. The race would feature 4 stages instead of 3 due to the longer distance. Each stage consisted of 100 laps, making up the full 400 lap, 600 mile distance. Photo courtesy of Google images.
The first incident of the night occurred in Stage 1 at lap 39. Jeffrey Earnhardt would lay oil on the track from a blown engine. Also coming to take the caution, Chase Elliott had an engine failure which resulted in his car slowing suddenly. Brad Keselowski would clobber the back of Elliott's car because of his car slowing on the track. All drivers were out of the race. Photos courtesy of Google images.
All Star race winner Kyle Busch took home stage 1. He ran up front for most of the stage. Photo courtesy of Google images.
The next incident occurred in stage 2 with 59 to go, as Matt DiBenedetto blew a tire going into turn 1 and hit the outside wall. Photo courtesy of Google images.
During stage 2, the rain would hit Charlotte Motor Speedway for a couple hours. There was also lightning in the area as well. The race did resume to it's conclusion however. Photos courtesy of Google images.
Stage 2 was back underway with defending race winner Martin Truex Jr taking home the victory for the stage. Photo courtesy of Google images.
Not much action took place in Stage 3 until 55 to go in the stage. Ty Dillon would also lay oil on the track, causing pole sitter Kevin Harvick to spin off turn 4. Photos courtesy of Google images.
Kyle Larson had a rough night as his race came to an end in Stage 3 with 9 to go in the stage. Larson made contact with the wall in turn 2 from earlier damage suffered in the race. He would be out of the race. Photo courtesy of Google images.
Denny Hamlin took home his second stage win of the year, winning stage 3. Photo courtesy of Google images.
Danica Patrick's bad luck would continue as she blew a tire going into turn 3 in stage 4 with 72 to go. She made contact with the wall and suffered damage. Photo courtesy of Google images.
At the end of it all, Austin Dillon gambled on fuel and made it to the finish to win his first career Monster Energy Cup win. Jimmie Johnson also gambled on fuel but ran out with 2 laps to go. It was good to see the number 3 car back in victory lane. That's all for now. I hope you enjoyed the recap. Next week I recap the action from Dover. Till then, goodnight everyone.
